About The Artwork

The Dragon Gate

Xenia Bapasola

Acrylic on canvas

A1 Size

50% of proceeds from the sale of this painting will go towards NKF’s fundraising to support the treatment and care of kidney failure patients in need.

The painting is based on the mythology of the carp that could turn into a dragon by jumping over the Dragon Gate. As people, we have an incredible strength to overcome all obstacles in life, if (like the carp) we are brave enough to take the leap.

This painting serves as a reminder to the viewer to take that leap, and find true strength and freedom. The imagery in the painting is also inspired by Joo Chiat Road in Singapore.

Artist Profile:

I am Xenia Bapasola, a young artist of Indian descent currently residing and working in Singapore. I strive to create spaces of safety and beauty within my artwork, weaving together the natural world to create an alternative spatial dimension, both within myself and upon the canvas.

Often, when we find ourselves faced with the immutable challenges of life, daunted by the viciousness of this world, we tend to stay within that space of powerlessness and pain, unable to be in this physical world, and instead trapped in the cruelty of a disturbing situation. Through my work I explore internalized trauma responses, while creating spaces of safety that can be projected upon the external canvas.

Strength is an internal reservoir that can be reinforced through the constant intentional analyzation of beauty in this world, in order to use it to overcome and overwhelm that which attempts to disturb it. It is this notion that I hope to portray within my work and give to those who behold it.

Life is a balance between beauty and pain; however, I intend on tipping the scale in favor of beauty.

About The Art of Giving

‘The Art of Giving’ was conceptualised by The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) in 2018 as an alternative fundraiser through auction and sale of donated artworks.

The collaboration between NKF and Pei Lin Limited Liability Partnership stands as a testament to the transformative power of art and the profound impact of giving. Through this initiative, artists have come together to harness their creative talents in support of a worthy cause, demonstrating how the art of giving can foster compassion, creativity, and collaboration.

By pledging 50% of sales proceeds to NKF, these artists have not only shared their artistry with the world but also extended a lifeline of support to individuals in need. As we reflect on the art of giving as a collaboration between NKF and Pei Lin LLP, we are reminded of the boundless potential of collective action to create a brighter, more compassionate world—one brushstroke, sculpture, or photograph at a time.
